I have been racking my brain forever trying to figure out how this makes sense. How would fragments from the world he was born on hurt him?! Closest thing I can figure is that the fragments have been soaked in the red son of Krypton and still have radiation from it. But that would only explain why the Kryptonite is taking away Superman's powers, it still doesn't explain how it kills him. Anyone ever heard of an explanation for this in the comics?

I am not clear on the effects on superman really. I dont read superman, but does kkryptonite actually make him sick and hurt him, or does is more make him mortal and back at the state is is normally in. I dont know about the radiation thing, I thought he had fought on other planets with diffrent or no sun. I though he had so many hours until he was effected. I dont know superman is lame. lol

I don't remember what the other vairous flavors do, theres a wiki entry on it

Well so far, in Cost-Crisis continuity, only Green Kryptonite has been really used. Everybody knows what that does. And a very few times Black Kryptonite has surfaced Post-Crisis. In the comics this makes an evil twin, at least it did in Supergirl. And in Smallville it just makes the Kryptonian himself evil. All the other colors of the rainbow were in the Silver Age and did a various number of things, some of them just downright goofy.

If a planet billions of light years away explodes sending small pieces of it in every direction, what are the odds that so many pieces would end up on earth? I swear, it's like Lex can't step outside without tripping over some radioactive pieces of a far away dead planet.

Wasn't the ship he was sent to Earth in covered in Kryptonite?

Even so, it DOES seem weird. Maybe it's not the effects of the kryptonite itself, but maybe it's reaction inside the Earth's atmosphere. Or maybe as someone else mentioned, it was irradiated from the explosion.

And yes, it does seem strange that Luthor seems to come across a rather large amount of the stuff on a regular basis.

Especially when Krypton was supposed to be in another galaxy!!!

At least that's how it was explained in the movie.

My understanding is that it wasn't necessarily something that could have been found on the surface of the planet Krypton. Like many of our planet's minerals, it was predominately found under the surface of the planet, and when it exploded, there you have it...millions of tons of kryptonite floating around in space. Since the planet exploded in all directions, then naturally, one of the directions would have been the same path that took Superman's spacecraft to Earth, and that would explain why fragments of the planet are on Earth. That's my theory at least as I have understood the mythology. Like many elements on Earth that produce radiation that is harmful to humans, so too would it be possible for elements of Krypton to hurt Kryptonians.

From what I understand, it Kryptonite is pieces of Krypton that landed here on Earth (Yes I know we have established this, Im just being long winded). As for the effects themselves I think it is the yellow sun that causes the crystals to release radiation that brings pain and perhaps even death to Kal-El. Their chemical composition compounded with the constant exposure to the Red Krpton Sun leads to the radiation from the yellow sun.

Well the PRE-Crisis universe said that everything that was blown up on Krypton was made radioactive, but on a scale that it wasn't hurtful to humans but deadly to Kryptonians, there were several different types, like Green-Death, Red-mutating effects, White-harmful only to plant life, Gold-stripped powers away for good, Jewel K and the list goes on and on.

POST-Crisis history told us that a terrorist group known as the Black Zero once tried to destroy Krypton with a nuke. the attempt was stopped but in doing so caused the chain reaction that later destroyed the planet centuries later, that chain reaction was causing the very core of the planet to turn radioactive, it glowed green and was killing Kryptonians all over the world before it blew up. Only one piece made it to Earth as it was embedded in Kal-El's ship as it escaped Krypton. Luthor wound up in possession of it after ripping it out of Metallo's chest. Luthor tried to make his own and created Red K which stripped Superman of his powers temporaily. The Green K is dangerous to humans as well, it cost Luthor his hand and he made a piece into a ring he wore to keep Superman at bay.

Now with all the retcons and so forth, I don't know whats going on with Kryptonite I think Johns and Donner brought back all the "31 Flavors" back and now it's pretty much back to the Silver Age way, he is no longer the lone survivor of Krypton he's gone through about 4 different Supergirls and now 3 sets of Jor-El's and Lara's, 3 sets of Zod's, talking pets are back blech...now you know why I don't read Superman much at all anymore.

- Green Kryptonite In superpowered Kryptonians, causes immediate physical pain and debilitation and kills within hours. Has no short-term effects on humans or non-superpowered Kryptonians. The most common form of Kryptonite.
Anti-Kryptonite - Has no effect on superpowered Kryptonians, but has the same effects as green Kryptonite on non-superpowered Kryptonians.
Red Kryptonite - created from green Kryptonite that passed through a mysterious red-hued cloud en route to Earth
The 3rd planet from the sun; the planet on which we live. Red Kryptonite inflicts random effects (physical transformations, mostly) on Kryptonians. Each specific chunk of red Kryptonite has the same effect on all Kryptonians, but no two chunks have the same effect as one another. Red Kryptonite effects typically last for 1-2 days, after which the Kryptonian in question is forevermore immune to that specific chunk of Red Kryptonite.
Gold Kryptonite - removes superpowers from Kryptonians permanently.
White Kryptonite - kills all plant life, whether Kryptonian or not. Induces decay immediately upon exposure, with a range of about 25 yards.
Blue Kryptonite - The result of using Professor Potter's "duplicator ray" on some green Kryptonite. Blue Kryptonite kills Bizarros, but has no effect on Kryptonians. (In the Super Friends TV series, Blue Kryptonite is used to reverse the effects of Red Kryptonite on Superman.)
X-Kryptonite - Created by Supergirl while experimenting with green Kryptonite. It has no effect on Kryptonians, but bestows temporary superpowers on Earth lifeforms, most prominently Supergirl's pet cat Streaky.
Jewel Kryptonite - Jewel Kryptonite amplifies the psychic powers of Phantom Zone residents, allowing them to project illusions into the "real world" or perform mind control. It was made from what was left of a mountain on Krypton called Jewel Mountain.
Slow Kryptonite - A modified variety of green Kryptonite produced by a Terran scientist that decelerates the speed of nerve impulses, and movements of both Kryptonians and Terrans.
Silver Kryptonite - A fictional variety of Kryptonite that was used in a hoax perpetrated by Superman's friends in honor of the 25th anniversary of Superman's arrival on Earth.
Yellow Kryptonite - Another fictional variety, this one used in a hoax masterminded by Lex Luthor.
Pink Kryptonite - From an alternate timeline in Supergirl, this variety of Kryptonite turns Kryptonians (apparently) gay. However, this was intended as a joke, not part of normal comics continuity.W-T-F?
Black Kryptonite - First used in the Smallville TV show. This variety of Kryptonite was used in the episode "Crusade". It is apparently able to separate certain entities from people.

That pretty much explains the different kryptonites
