While it might not be getting a whole lot of Oscar love Sunday evening, The Dark Knight has reached a level of success only three other films before it have managed – Warner Bros. announced Friday that the film had surpassed the $1 billion dollar mark in worldwide box office receipts.
According to Variety, the studio placed the movie's combined domestic and international gross at $1,001,082,160 to date , or broken down about $533 million in North America and $567 million overseas.
Ecuador was the country that put The Dark Knight over the top, a Warner Bros. spokesperson revealed.
The Christopher Nolan epic joins Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest as the only film to have pulled off the feat.
Warner Bros. also reportedly noted that it's the largest 2-D digitally re-mastered IMAX release in the domestic market with $49.6 million and worldwide with $64.9 million.

Uh, it got plenty of Oscar love. It won twice, for awards it deserved. Benjamin Button stole a couple it shouldn't have, but they weren't stolen from Dark Knight.

That's pretty sweet! I find it more interesting that it made more money internationally that it did domestically. I wonder if that's the case for the other movies that have reached that plateau.

There are 306 million people in the United States. There are 6.8 billion people on Earth. Do the math.
Any movie has the poptential to make more money internationally than in the United States (or even North America) alone.
If you count North America, well Canada only adds 33.5 million people to the US' 306 million.

Remember
Equilibrium
(also with Christian Bale)? The movie totally kicked ass but didn't get much of a release here in the states?
That was because the movie was released internationally
before
it was released in the states and it made a ton of money so the investors were afraid if they pump millions into a huge American release and it doesn't hit number 1 at the box office, it'll end up losing money overall.
Also...remember Spielbergs
AI
? Not many do since it sucked. It tanked here in the states but ended up as the biggest money maker of the year due to the foreign market.
So yeah...films get more press when they make a lot of money in the states but the
real
money is in the foreign release.
A wise man once said "Every day I thank god I'm an atheist."
